Coach vs Student

Updated: Jan 10, 2023

It's been an interesting experience being on both sides of the Coach / Student relationship for the last year. As many of you know I have been training for long distance triathlons for over a year now and it has given me such a valuable insight into what a students feels and why they do certain things..... and also why the sometimes shouldn't!!

But like all students I am very much guilty of making so many mistakes!! But there are certainly some rules that I would advise everyone to follow:

Coach knows best!

I'm not sure if this is easy to say or hard!! But I have definitely learned this the hard way.... Coach knows best!! If they are telling you to do something there is always a reason behind it, just do it!! There is a reason you have them as a coach, they are more experienced and more knowledgeable than you are, use that knowledge and trust it!

Experiment........ and discuss

It's ok to try things, but be prepared to make mistakes while doing so. Also be prepared for a discussion on it after with your coach! Just don't jump so deep down that rabbit hole so you can't get out!!

Fail...... and learn!!

Which brings me nicely onto the next point..... It's ok to fail..... as long as you learn from it!! If you make a mistake it's no real issue, we all do! But don't make the same mistake twice!

Stick to your plan

It's always good to sit down at the start of a year, create a solid plan and attack the goals that you have set out to achieve! However, creating such a plan is only useful if you stick to it! There is always room to adjust, but do it wisely and under the advise of your coach!

Don't let others sidetrack you

It's so easy to look at those around you and admire their training sessions, technical changes they have made or even the equipment they use. One thing to remember is that this best approach may not necessarily be yours! Plough your own path and don't let others side track you. Remember "Horses for courses".

Be careful of social media

Everyone is a superstar on instagram and everyone has the magic cure on Youtube!! Don't get sucked in, 90% of these posts and videos have been cherry picked or even just completely made up! Refer to the previous point....... STICK TO YOUR PLAN!

Some coaches go above and beyond - This is my coach Jess Towl on a trip to Greece with us for an Ironman 70.3 event.
