When I watch golfers miss putts (both on the golf course & in practice) their instinct is to immediately blame technique. A miss to the left is almost always followed by "Ohhhhh I pulled that", yet very rarely do I hear someone blame the miss on their speed control or their read.
The deep rooted reason for this is down to how we practice our putting. Traditional training and training aids are almost entirely focused on the starting line of the golf ball, something we can see and alter with immediate effect. Yet in reality there is a skill to putting, and that skill involves perfecting all 3 dimensions of a putt (Start Line, Speed & Read).
So how do you work on perfecting these 3 elements, or at the very least identify which one is causing the most issues? Green reading 101 is a perfect start:
